i certainly have no qualms about my strange interweb browsing habits. but here are some of the places i paused on.... Generalissimo - from wikipedia. i can't for the life of me follow this trail back to its origin. NATO Supreme Allied Commander - also wikipedia. this one, i think traces back to alex haig, via this. ted stevens, sort of. he sucks and wants to drill everywhere in alaska (easy when you live in DC half the time, and rarely go to barrow) gavel order for potus. i think this is from alex haig too. alexander haig - almost as dangerous as curtis lemay? i once knew a guy, andrew haig. coincidence? this is actually interesting "news" - iraqi polling data indicates ~91.7% of iraqis want the 'mericans out. i have long felt that it's too late for the coalition to get out - it would be morally unjustifiable to leave the country in such a state. the day bagdahd fell, people were predicting the end of the UN, multilateralism and all sorts of other prudent things. i can't tell if any peace and security will be brought to iraq without an int'l force; but it strikes me that letting the rule of warlords and accomodationist politics return is of no benefit. a dictatorship by "democracy" is worse than a plain old despot. VNRs and fake news - now, straight from the horse's, er, government's mouth i was investigating some of my mother's real and imagined ailments. led me here. fuck starbucks. and then? i went this afternoon....

like many jews, i am consumed with the events in the region; particularly those i see as watershed moments. i have never been a zealous supporter of israel, and have long advocated a two state solution; which really means i believe palestinians deserve a homeland just as jews do. further, as a reform jew it has been complicated, since the movement generally is supportive of israel, but the response is not as knee-jerk as AIPAC or the Cdn Jewish Congress, et al. The nuances, are therefore more important to me, since i do not feel represented in the mainstream jewish reading of events. young reform jews have called on the movement to evaluate the violence more critically. indeed there are canadian jewish groups doing the same. and then, this editorial; it argues that Jews are moving the right on account of lack of Liberal support for Israel. Although the article points out the social justice work that faith communities across the country do regularly, and rarely receive credit for, it attributes to harper a position he never took. the PM's unflinching support of Israel is because stephen harper's agenda for canada is to move her expiditiously and forcefully to the right. he would have canada's foreign policy align with that of our so-called natural allies; he would pursue a security strategy that negates the nuances in militant groups; he is carving up the canadian social safety net, and undermining our collective efforts to resolve the socioeconomic and political vacuum of first nations. in short, stephen harper would like his calgary school version of canada to be the singular version of the canadian experience. a canada attached at the hip to the destiny, trials, and tribulations of the united states neglects the entire purpose of our peoplehood. the PM could still have the same position he had/has on israel if he weren't hell bent on destroying the progress of the 1990s, 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s, etc. he could be supportive of israel in this particular conflict and be well intentioned and good for canada. these are not mutually exclusive things; however, this prime minister's support for israel is not rooted in canadian interests. rather, it is rooted in the interests of the reform party and the university of calgary's political science department. on that note, i still call for canada to send it's 1200 former golan troops to lebanon. enjoy your sunday friends. soon, i hope, i will be done obsessing over israel. in other news, cirque du soleil is coming to washington, and i plan to see it! yes!!!

how can this be? the whole world seems to be SO occupied with what occurs in this very area; why not supply troops? Canada just recently finished a tour in Golan; it has 1200 troops to give to the cause. there are plenty of reasons to "stay out" of it; but the moral obligation is too much to refuse.

i got lost on the internerd this morning. here is what i found: this guy is nuts. but i read his site often. oh, i see. she's pretty hardcore. he seems to have a problem. ah, divestment. what investments do we have in hizb'allah anyway? anti-semitism and 21st century jewishness are so convoluted that these conversations (one, two) are forced out of public dialogue. and, yet, outside of the political discourse, the conversations continue without the full weight of public interest or discussion. enjoy the day.

it appears that friday night, sackville suffered a major fire. currently there is very little information available publicly, or to those outside of town. the entire downtown block has been destroyed, and the face of sackville's downtown will change as a result. plenty of folks of homeless and have lost everything, including small businesses. many more are inconvenienced by smoke damage. there is no information about a relief fund or anything like that, yet.

summer is an interesting time of year. it used to feel like the intermission in my perpetual stage show. with time, that feeling became more and more full. first with summer camp; then with summer jobs, then with jobs that last all year. what i learned, starting with summer camp, was that the summer was always a moment to reflect and try and renew - waaaay more of a new year than jan 1. i suppose it's convenient to do said "reflection" near the high holidays. and today, of all days, i went to a funeral to celebrate the life of a co-worker's sister; so, perhaps i'm a bit into that right now. either way, i don't always feel like i'm making the right choices, like everyone else; but the overarching point for me, is how summer slows it all down, and yet, still whips by. enough rambling. here are some of the things i stopped on: one. two. three.
