cuddling with the dog is pretty much my favorite thing on earth to do. Here is an excerpt from an article I read: In testimony before the House International Affairs Committee, two high-ranking members of the State Department painted a much harsher portrait of Iraq and spelled out additional steps that the Bush administration is taking to limit Baghdad's regional rise. Robert Joseph, the under secretary of state for arms control and international security, declared that Iraq had "put both feet on the accelerator" in its drive for nuclear weapons, and said the United States believed that Baghdad is pursuing biological and chemical weapons as well. Mr. Joseph said the threat posed by Iraq's pursuit of nuclear weapons and missiles called for a broad response by the United States, including "the missile defenses that we need to deploy to address the threat." R. Nicholas Burns, the under secretary of state for political affairs, said that Iraq had become "the leading banker of major terrorist groups in the Middle East" and was seeking "to make itself into the dominant force in the Middle East." Why do I post this? Because I altered the above exceprt. Read the original and identify the changes!

It seems that everyone is freaking about the price of oil. Indeed, if the price craze has shown us anything it's this:
1. we're addicted to oil
2. oil markets do not operate properly
3. the media love being alarmist
many are calling for a gas tax cut, and it's not even summer. here's the thing: the government should increase taxes on gasoline! the cut should be to the record profits of avaricious oil companies. drivers are indeed suffering at the pump - so trade in your SUV and get a smart car. REDUCTION is the first "R" and if it takes gasoline hitting $2 a litre or $4 a gallon over the next 18 months to create change, so be it. we need to invest in alternative energy; and ETHANOL DOES NOT QUALIFY!
in other things:
one. i've always thought that glass wine bottles on any airline were fodder for makeshift molotov cocktails.
two. saw it coming; still depressing.
three. the man who would be prime minister... does anyone have any experience?
four. FREE MARC EMERY! Ask lunatic justice minister vic toews to NOT extradite him!!
five. this headline is exactly why we can't be happy with ourselves. We may be happy in bed, so long as we're not thinking about how america might or might not notice if we come.

Justice For Jude Justice for All this is urgent, outrageous, and imperative that it gets more attention.
70 casualties, including the attacker, is, I think, a little more than a "rift." the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians is far more than a little playground argument. Further, all western governments have condemned the attack, including canada. theoretically, the headline could be "bombing deepens hamas rift with canada" or "with uSA" or "with EU" etc etc.

such a week. i get back to canada and this happens. now i'm enjoying as spring settles in here, and it's lovely. passover starts tonight, but each visit home is gluten free so it won't be that hardcore: bread is already a rarity here. and to make it official: here - a gift from my internet browsing.

okay, here goes. how do i feel about targeted assasinations? when does a civilian become a legitimate military target?
did some reading on metric time. or as it is also known, decimal time. or french revolutionary time. very interesting experiements, these were.
David Berlin wrote an article recently in the walrus magazine. this is the only bio i could find of his. strange; but i suppose most of his life must have occured pre-internet.
here's to jessica lynch and psyops. is it just media bias or good reporting?
two weeks ago the debt ceiling in the USA was raised. let's hope the GDP keeps growing...
wanna buy some uranium? i think w. can hook us up...
maybe coups and former military dictatorships are helpful in this arena? i tend to hope that non-violence will sweep the globe like it swept the portugese. but maybe it takes a milder dictator to prompt that.
and now, the life and times of friends afar and district occurences. on film. in print. overseas.

why is the national post such a right wing rag? why can't they hire mildly biased reporters instead of these hacks?

saw this today. Certainly the former government's agenda normally pivoted around what the media was harping on; and advancing the insular political interests of a small cadre of Martin's supporters. This new government however has simply abandoned the very role it was elected to fill. Government is meant to be more than the sum of election promises; leaders ought to respond to events, ongoing concerns, and act as a general managers of the machinery of government. If all the conservatives can do is raise taxes to cut them, or give corporate child care a tax break, filtered through canadians' pocketbooks, I fear for the tremendous work there is to do in our role as, say, environmental stewards, or how Canada can best ensure the economy is not riding the coattails of a reactionary oil market. government house leader rob nicholson, a dangerous social conservative, has tossed in a couple of his pet priorities: repealing the gun registry that keeps track of legal guns in Canada (surely useful to police?); and raising the age of consent for sex to 16 (was mr. nicholson a lonely 14/15 yr old?). why will these so-called peripheral items be addressed by parliament when everything else is shelved in favor of the top five promises of accountability, the gst cut, child care rebates, a waiting list guarantee to be negotiated with the provinces, and the crime crackdown (the gun registry is apparently part of a different promise). the only good news is this.
